DV: Did it seem at this point like LaserDiscs were about to take off? BS: No. VHS was exploding. It was like being in the CD-ROM business when the Web was exploding. I was at a meeting one day with the president of RKO Home Video, and I said to him, “So, what’s the chance you would sell me the rights to Citizen Kane and King Kong for LaserDisc?” He said, “Well, they’re not worth anything to...

With very few exceptions, the best films I’ve seen this year have been on TV, specifically Jeffrey Blitz’s Lucky for HBO, as well as Steve James’ No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson and Dan Klores’ Winning Time: Reggie Miller Vs. The New York Knicks for ESPN. This doesn’t bode well for the film industry, but good movies are good movies.

Can People Stop Saying, "I'm a Little OCD"?
There’s nothing that annoys me more than when someone explains a tiny tic or compulsion and goes: “What can I say? I’m a little OCD.” Here’s what makes obsessive-compulsive disorder crippling for people who actually have it: It’s not “a little” anything. It consumes every aspect of their life. Some people who suffer form it can’t sleep; some...

I’ve described works as being “Advanced” before, and this article has a concise explanation of what that means from a critical standpoint. If you care about such things, you should read it. Unfortunately, I haven’t read Hartley’s book yet—it’s in the mail—but I follow him on twitter, which is kind of like reading his book.

"Comic-Con Is Humanly Impossible"- Gabe- Videogum →
What I’m trying to get at is that it seems fully possible for one to spend one’s life in an infinite Comic-Con line with no determinable outcome. You will be like Seido in Inception, getting noodles in your old man beard, wondering whether shooting yourself in the head would even FIX anything. No mind to speak of, that is for sure. It’s really an experience unlike anything I’ve ever known. It...

"Bill Murray Is Ready to See You Now"- Dan... →
This whole interview is fantastic because Bill Murray is America’s uncle, but this exchange in particular is jawdroppingly honest and revealing. This type of thing has to happen all the time, but we’ll never hear about it from anyone else. There’s only one Bill Murray. “Okay. Well, how about Garfield? Can you explain that to me? Did you just do it for the dough? No! I...
