Matt Singer is the king of these types of lists, and this is a topic that is definitely a favorite of The Quest.

“Let me toss out the idea that, as our markets discover and respond to what consumers most want, our technology has become extremely adept at creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly, and makes us feel all powerful, and doesn’t throw terrible scenes when it’s replaced by an...

“What these auteurs truly have in common, though, is that they have systematically boiled away many of the pleasures previously associated with comedy — first among these, jokes themselves — and replaced them with a different kind of lure: the appeal of spending two hours hanging out with a loose and jocular gang of goofy bros. (Also: ritual humiliation. Humiliation is a big part of it,...

"50 Great New Orleans Rap Songs"- Andrew Noz-... →
tumblinerb:
When @Willystaley did his 50 Greatest Bay Area Rap Songs for Complex we talked about the frustrations that come with doing a list like this. Well it’s still frustrating. New Orleans in particular was a difficult task because there’s such a wide disparity of styles. How much No Limit and Cash Money is too much No Limit and Cash Money? Where and how much bounce fits into the equation?...

What can I say? I understand Hitler, but I think he did some wrong things, yes,...
– Director Lars von Trier, sparking controversy at a Cannes press conference for his latest film, Melancholia.
Von Trier prefaced his rambling remarks (which were in response to a question about his German roots) by saying that he “really wanted to be a Jew,” until he found out he “was really a Nazi,...

This is pretty close to what I was trying to say yesterday, but it’s less angry. Also, it’s not a Bridesmaids think-piece if it doesn’t mention the Bechdel Test or the New Yorker Anna Faris profile. I dun goofed.

"Bridesmaids: Am I Doing Being a Woman Wrong?"-... →
Bridesmaids has been billed as a female answer to the bro-comedies of the past decade, if not a female antidote to popular culture’s gender bias in general. That’s, of course, overstating what the film tries to achieve on its own terms. It is instead a legitimately funny movie with engaging characters—regardless of those characters’ genders. It’s sad that Hollywood...

“You barbecue or mildew. And I got paper plates at the barbecue.” This is the best.
Style Note
From now on, when quoting an excerpt from a person’s work that I’m linking to, I’m going to italicize it. I’ve always put it into quotation marks, but I’d like to add italics as well. Nothing bothers me more than someone not making it absolutely clear where one person’s work ends and his begins.

“Creating a culture site when you essentially have no interest in an entire medium and celebrate your willful blindness to acclaimed work from other media means it can only operate if the intent is actually to be bad at it. In one sense, Jack Kevorkian is an incredibly flawed doctor, but if you approach him from a different frame of reference, he’s a specialist with an...

"Thor: Have Golden Locks, Seeking Hammer"- A.O.... →
“The thing is, though, that the kind-of-O.K. aspects of ‘Thor’ have the effect of making it more depressing, rather than less. The movie cannot be an interesting, appalling train wreck because it lacks the spoiled grandeur of ambition gone off the rails. You can’t sit and marvel (as it were) over what went wrong because nothing, at the level of execution, really has gone wrong....

"The Reality Principle: The Rise and Rise of a... →
“One of the biggest differences between today’s reality television and its 1973 antecedent is the genre’s status. Having outgrown PBS, it has inherited the rotten reputation that once attached to the medium itself. In an era of televised precocity—ambitious HBO dramas, cunningly self-aware sitcoms—reality shows still provide a fat target for anyone seeking symptoms or causes of American...
