Jeff Mangum Occupy Wall Street ShowEquipped with an appropriate cover of Minutemen’s iconoclastic punk anthem “Themselves,” Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum continued his return to the spotlight tonight with a high-profile, impromptu set at the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York. In addition to his rousing rendition of that tune, Mangum incited the crowd with plenty of Aeroplane favorites (“Holland, 1945,” “Oh Comely,” “Two-Headed Boy,” et al.) as well. The full unplugged show was caught on tape above.
It’s almost worth living somewhere as terrible as New York to witness serendipitous stuff like this once in a while. Am I the only one who has a problem with the “sing if you know it” stuff though? I’m all for a sense of community, but Jeff Mangum only plays in public every ten years or so. I would appreciate hearing him over the protesters who happened to congregate on that corner.

This feels like a huge win for Team 90s. I’m also thrilled to see that a crowd holding cameras is not a crowd too cool...
Portland’s turn tomorrow. Hoping
