I’m about two months late, but I’m finally getting into this M.I.A. mixtape. Predictably, it goes hard. Although I get that what she has to say is important to her, she’s at her best when she’s in the pocket of the beat and more worried about sounding good than sounding intelligent and revolutionary. That rhythm on a track-to-track basis was the whole point of Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1, and it’s what made /\/\ /\ Y /\ so frustrating for me. Here, she gets swept up in the momentum of the music, and the crowning moment is this diverting Danja-produced banger.
