James Blake- “A Case of You”
From his live performances
If it has to be James Blake month over here, it can be. Because he kind of speeds through this one effortlessly, his vocal runs barely ending in time to sing the next line, there’s a bashful quality to it that’s unnerving. He sounds like a friend who commandeered the piano but doesn’t want to show off. The original Joni Mitchell song, off the underrated-then-overrated-then-underrated-again Blue, is about completely giving yourself up to another person. That Blake plays it so fast makes it sound appropriately self-defeating. Mitchell would do anything to give you this feeling; Blake knows it’s not even worth trying.
